Cedar Rapids-Bob Whitlock of rural Shellsburg swears by Llewellin hunting dogs. It is why he and his wife Laura raise them at Hickory Hollow.
We joined the Whitlocks on the opening day of pheasant season and watched Bristol, Tuck and Duchess do their thing. They had great energy and, for the most part, did not range too far out in front.
Bob says they are natural pointers and are trained to retrieve.
But when there aren't any pheasants around, the work can be tough. We saw exactly one bird on Saturday, and that's when we were getting out of our vehicles.
As Bob says of pheasant hunting, "It's going to be a long year in Iowa."
