NORTH LIBERTY - The North Liberty Police Department offers one more reminder for those traveling around and through North Liberty as RAGBRAI brings approximately 20,000 visitors to the community this Thursday, July 24.
The detours and closures will be effective beginning early Thursday morning.
Traffic delays will be expected at key intersections including Highway 965 and Penn Street, Penn and Dubuque streets, Cherry Street and Highway 965, Cherry and Dubuque streets and Front and Penn Streets.
Police are recommending that drivers do NOT use exit 4 (Penn Street) off of I-380 on Thursday because of the large amount of bike traffic expected.
On the morning of Friday, July 25, expect delays at Front and Penn Streets as bikes exit town on Front Street, which becomes Mehaffey Bridge Road. The North Liberty Police Department intends to provide traffic control assistance at these intersections during the high traffic times.
Below is the complete list of closings and detours:
• Cherry Street will be closed to through traffic all day. People going to businesses and homes along Cherry will have to make contact with people standing at barricades at the corner of Highway 965 and Cherry Street, and go with the flow of bike traffic (west to east) to get to Cherry Street businesses. Parking passes were delivered to the people that live in the condominiums along Cherry Street.
• Jones Boulevard between Cherry Street and Penn Street will be closed to motorized vehicle traffic until 7 p.m.
• Penn Street's eastbound lane only from Kansas Avenue to Jones Boulevard will be closed to motorized vehicle traffic until 7 p.m. Westbound traffic will be allowed all day.
• Penn Street's eastbound traffic will be detoured north or south to Highway 965. From the west, the north detour begins left (north) on Kansas to Lininger Lane, left (north) on Alexander Way and right (east) onto 240th Street to Highway 965. From the west, Penn Street's south detour begins right (south) on Kansas, all the way to 270th St./St. Andrews Drive, left (east) on 270th St./St. Andrews Drive, right (south) on Jones Boulevard, and left (east) on Forevergreen Road to Hwy 965.
• Front Street will be closed to crossing traffic at Cherry Street. Traffic will be routed onto Dubuque Street.
• There will by NO PARKING on Cherry Street, Zeller Street, Penn Street, Jones Boulevard, Highway 965 or Lininger Lane . These streets will be posted "no parking" on both sides.
