RAGBRAI Legend, 'Mr. Pork Chop', Hangs it Up

By Becky Ogann

AMES - Construction crews aren't the only ones spending long, hot days on the road. Thousands of cyclists pedaled 56 miles from Jefferson to Ames. RAGBRAI is staying overnight in cyclone country.

KCRG T-V Nine's John Campbell has the story of a RAGBRAI legend.

For 25-years, a famous call drew RAGBRAI riders to "Mr. Pork Chop," Paul Bernhard. Last year was his final season on the circuit.

Friends honored Bernhard on Tuesday.

Paul may be retiring from RAGBRAI, but riders will still be able to get those chops. Paul's son Matt will be carrying on the tradition.

Tomorrow the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa rolls on to Tama-Toledo, passing through Nevada, Albion, Le Grand and Montour along the way.
