Our Town Waukon - Pizza and a Movie
WAUKON - At first glance, this looks like a normal movie theater. But it's the tables and smell of pizza that set it apart from others. We're at the Main Feature located on main street Waukon. As the second oldest movie theater in Waukon, it was renovated 18 years ago so customers could enjoy pizza and a movie. In just a few minutes, these tables will be full as the Friday night feature begins.
"I loved movies when I was younger. We paid ten cents to go and watch a movie. That was quite a thrill," said Pat Kerndt, Main Feature Manager.
Now, Pat Kerndt gets to be around movies every night. She manages the Main Feature Theater and Pizza Pub in downtown Waukon. When pat and her daughter bought the business in 2002, it already had a long history of entertaining. A local man in the theater business built the building in 1938. Ownership changed hands a few times before the Kerndts bought it. And Pat loves her job.
"I enjoy working with the public, meeting new friends. Every day is a new challenge." splice "It's been a good business for me. We've built up a good customer base," said Kerndt.
The restaurant does pizza deliveries and carry-out. But what makes it unique, of course, is the Main Feature movie. Pat's son-in-law is the one who picks the movies. They get new releases and some that are a few weeks old. Pat says the Main Feature is a place for family outings.
"They are together. It's something they are doing together. That's what we need in this day and age- more family togetherness," said Kerndt.
