Our Town Waukon sits in the heart of Allamakee County. Nestled between rolling hills and trees some call it picture perfect. The Mississippi River Valley gives the community its natural beauty. And Monday that's what Anvy Wicks has come to see.
"They asked me what I was going to do for my birthday and I said, go up in a balloon," said Wicks.
This is her 80th birthday present, a view and a journey she will never forget.
And her pilot, Al Hanson, a good friend that has been taking hot air balloons to the sky for 28-years. He's the owner of Drift Away Hot Air Balloons.
Al spends his evenings showing visitors the best of Waukon, the view. He says he enjoys flying hot air balloons because you never know where you're going to land.
"You can make this balloon drop at about 1,400 foot per minute or a little more. And it will climb at about 1000 feet per minute," said Al Hanson, Drift Away Hot Air Balloons.
And the joy Al brings to his passengers is ever present. Smiles fill their faces as they skim the top of the corn fields. A first for Anvy Wicks, it's a chance to drift away and see her home from a very different perspective.
