NORTH LIBERTY - The North Liberty Community Library has a unique location, its connected to the towns community center.

"There is no way I would trade this building for a stand alone library, its just great the way it is."

Nearly a decade ago the city decided it would add the library expansion to the community center. In the first year the libraries circulation tippled, and its continued to rise since then.

"We are all here in the community center in North Liberty. I believe we are the only building like this in the whole state that combines four different city departments in one building."

What really makes this library special is not the building its in, but what they check out. The Libraries collection of 200-Wilton Designer Cake pans draws patrons from surrounding towns.

"We didn't know where to put them when we moved down here we had a few, we didn't have this many. So some people from the city department built us these racks which is nice because they match our book cases, and people can wonder down the shelves until they find the cake pan they want."

From Harry Potter, to Whinnie the Poo, and The Flinstones, it seems the collection has a pan for just about any occasion.

"The first cake pan I used was this one, the hot air balloon pan. My daughter who is now 13, when she was 4 wanted a hot air balloon birthday party. So I thought where am I going to find a hot air balloon pan. So somebody told me that the North Liberty Library actually has pans," said Krista Buser, who rents cake pans.

The library receives numerous cake pan donations every year. When the library expands they hope to have an entire display dedicated to the collection.

"When I'm checking out I always say ok, my only requirement for checking out a cake pan is you bring the director back a piece of cake. I would say one time out of five I will get a pice of cake, which is nice."
