Our Town Marion: Kettle House Bakery and Cafe
By Ashley Hinson, Reporter
MARION, Iowa -- Emily and Cindy Kettlekamp are mother and daughter entrepreneurs in Marion. Together, they started the Kettle House Bakery and Café. The inspiration, born from years of 4-H projects and farmers markets and a talent and love for baking.
"The cool thing about Emily is that she is always willing to try something different. If someone comes in and they say, do you have? She will say not right now but if you want to order it I will take care of it," said Cindy Kettlekamp.
The Kettlekamp women conjure up made from scratch recipes that include delicious cinnamon rolls, cookies, bars and breads. The bakery and café smells of fresh baked goods that are made from the heart. Starting their own business was not an easy task. Together, the mother – daughter team faced the challenges of owning a small business. Soon after overcoming their own challenges, the women decided they could share their start up experience with others… possibly help other women achieve their dreams. Cindy Kettlekamp said, "We thought what a wonderful opportunity to have other women who struggled like we did join with us give them a safe place to try out their passion. "
Megan Knapz recently brought her business into the Kettle House Bakery and Cafe. Knapz said, "I started off baking from home and decided to take my cupcakes out to the public. It became evident this was something I could do, but yet it was really scary to think about opening my own business, the expense. So when I met Cindy and Emily it was like a match made in heaven. It was perfect."
Take the Cake Gourmet Cupcakes line the shelves at the bakery. " I try to bring in a variety of flavors in. This is wedding cake, the most popular flavor I have," said Knapz.
In just a few months, Knapz will move her cupcake business out of Kettle House Bakery – launching Take the Cake Gourmet Cupcakery on her own. A small business success story cooked up in the back of the Kettlecamp’s kitchen.
