Our Town Iowa City - Gatens Aims High
IOWA CITY - Over the years, Our Town Iowa City has been home to some mighty fine prep athletes. One of the best of the current crop is city high basketball player Matt Gatens, and as Matt has been a traveling man this summer.
It's been a busy summer for City High basketball star Matt Gatens globetrotting across the country hanging out with Kobe and Lebron.
"We drove out with my brother Martin's team to the Bronx, New York for four or five days. We took second place from there flew down to Virginia for the NBA camp came home for 15 hours and hopped on the plane for 3 or 4 days got home last night Akron Ohio next Thursday," said Gatens.
The camp in Los Angels was put on by NBA super-star Kobie Bryant and another NBA all-pro Lebron James ran the show in Akron. Both camps were invite only the top 100 high school basketball players in the country.
"It was exciting to see Kobie, I mean I haven't been around a guy of that stature you just took as much as you could from him. It's been awesome playing with the top players and coaches and top NBA players in the country. It's been a chance of a lifetime it's been a lot of fun," said Gatens.
Playing against the best players in the country at these camps has to improve your game.
"Here you are the biggest and strongest guy out there. But when you are playing against the top competition you have to work so hard just to get the ball or get you shot off it really teaches you a lot," said Gatens.
And lookout for City High next season. The two Derby brothers have transferred from Iowa City West and Todd Licklighter's son will also be on the Little Hawk's roster.
"To have some of the top players in the state playing with you it can't get any better than that first got to get to state and then win state that's my number one goal," said Gatens.
It's been a whirlwind summer for Matt Gatens and it will pay dividends on the basketball court this winter. For Our Town Iowa City.
After graduation matt will be staying in Our Town Iowa City. He has verbally committed to the Hawkeyes.
