Our Town Iowa City - The Famous Hamburg Inn

IOWA CITY - Let's learn a little bit about this famous restaurant, the Hamburg Inn. The owner likes to call it a 1950's time capsule of good eating.

"We are building onto the traditions my father started with good food, good service. We are not trying to be a chain," said owner, Dave Panther.

This tradition began in 1948. The panther family opened the Hamburg Inn restaurant as a classic American diner. Pork tenderloins, sweet potato pancakes, and pie shakes are a few of their specialties. Other than good food, the restaurant is also into politics.

"We're hoping to attract as many candidates as possible and have an open forum for both sides of the political spectrum," said Panther.

Various political candidates stop by the Hamburg Inn for meet and greets and to give speeches. The restaurant has also gotten national attention for its Coffee Bean Caucus. This attention got the Hamburg Inn featured in an episode of the NBC show the West Wing. Whether for food or politics, Hamburg Inn is certainly good at drawing in crowds.

"I think it's just a very comfortable place. It's a good people watching place," said Panther.
