Our Town Iowa City - A Look At Some Interesting People

IOWA CITY - David Zollo's home is more than just a home. It is the headquarters for his own record label: Trailer Records. He calls the label an informal cooperative.

"Not a lot of paperwork, not a lot of signed stuff- but a lot of handshaking," said Zollo.

But these handshakes have gotten him pretty far. There are twelve Iowa bands under his label, which he began in 1994. And Zollo is well-known outside of Iowa too. He recently played in a band on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. And one of his songs was featured on Brad Pitt's MySpace web page.

Zollo calls his style of music 'roots' and says it's a mixed genre.

"A lot of it is, geographically, being in Iowa you are at the confluence of all these- Chicago Blues, country western, the history of the Mississippi, jazz, the crossroads of different styles," said Zollo.

Another Iowa City resident entertaining from her home is radio talk show host Dottie Ray.

She broadcasts on KXIC from her home, through telephone lines. She's been at it for 48 years and has interviewed over 20,000 guests. She started broadcasting from her home so she didn't have to leave her daughter, who lives with a disability.

"It's just sort of like another part of my day, 15 minutes in the morning," said Ray.

Dottie ray calls herself a cheerleader for the volunteers of Johnson County. Most of her guests are part of non-profit organizations or are seeking publicity for fundraising events.

"I feel very lucky to have the opportunity. I've made lots of friends-wonderful friends-some who I've never even met," said Ray.
