DYSART, Iowa – Among the many businesses in Dysart is the Blacksmith Boutique, owned by Deb Roettger. After a career of being a realtor and living in Dysart all her life, she decided to start welding.

“I think there was a point when I thought, ‘What am I going to do with the rest of my life?’ This is a way of expressing myself and being the real person I was meant to be,” said Roettger.

She makes beautiful art out of what most regard as junk. She gets her metal supplies from farmers who are looking to discard it.

“The more unique the item the better it was, but the Metal tells the story,” she said. “The metal tells you what to do with it."

Roettger also sees rust as style, and has her own clothing line called “rusty wear.” It’s made from metal pieces applied to clothing with a mix of chemicals.
