Betty Jane Candies Satisfying Dubuque's Sweet Tooth for 75 Years
DUBUQUE, Iowa - For three-fourths of a century Our Town has been silencing its sweet tooth with a sweet shop.
Betty Jane Candies opened originally on Dubuque's Main Street in 1938. Candy lovers rejoice at the sight of the store's legendary Gremlin candies. Those are milk or dark chocolate covered caramel and pecan pieces. The shop bustles at Christmas Time, as families continue decades of traditions when they stuff stockings full of sweets.
The fall is also busy when the store works to make around 56-thousand caramel apples by hand. But there's one question we had to ask...who is Betty Jane?
" There actually is no Betty Jane. When they went to name the company, I think it was his grandmother, or his mother's idea at the time. They were thinking what to name it, and back then it was all Fannie Mae kind of old women names the stores and she just threw Betty Jane out there and that one stuck," Drew Siegert, President Betty Jane Homemade Candies Inc.
To celebrate 75 years, Betty Jane Candies will reopen its Asbury Road location which is currently being renovated. A celebration will likely be tied to the grand reopening sometime in July.
