This week on To The Point with Beth Malicki we'll look at the how the murder of football coach Ed Thomas focused the nation's attention on Aplington-Parkersburg... and mental illness.
Mark Becker will spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting of Thomas back in June of 2009. Becker's lawyers argued that's not where the 24-year-old belongs. They tried to convince the jury that Becker's schizophrenia made it impossible for him to understand what he was doing when he shot the coach multiple times. But the jury disagreed and found him guilty of first degree murder. He'll spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole.
On To The Point we'll discuss mental illness with June Judge with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), and Betsy Hradek, a nurse with clinical outreach services with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
