President Barack Obama will award Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, U.S. Army, formerly of Hiawatha, the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry in a White House ceremony Nov. 16.
Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions during combat operations against an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan in October 2007.
His wife, Jennifer, and his parents, Steven and Rosemary Giunta of Hiawatha are scheduled to attend the ceremony.
Steven Giunta said the family is proud their soldier’s courage in combat, his loyalty to the members of his unit and his humility in the media spotlight that has attended the announcement of the honor.
“I’m proud that he has deflected the honor to the other members of his squad. He knows that the medal could have just as well gone to any of them,” he said.
