INDEPENDENCE - A Coralville woman is accused of killing her 2-year-old son and attempting to kill her other child in Buchanan County.

Michelle Kehoe has been charged with 1st degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment causing injury.

Allan Vander Hart, Buchanan County Attorney, announced the charges in a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Vander Hart says that arrest warrants have been issued, but will not be served until Michelle Kehoe's treatment at UIHC has been completed. Vander Hart has declined to speculate on a motive for the crimes.

This bizarre case started Sunday night when Gene Kehoe of Coralville told police his wife and family had disappeared during a drive to visit family in Sumner.

Authorities found the family's van in a rural area near Littleton after Michelle Kehoe went to a nearby rural home for help. Law officers found Seth, 2, dead from cuts to his neck and Michelle Kehoe and her son Sean, 7, had serious injuries. Michelle initially told police a man with a knife attacked them.

A criminal complaint released on Thursday give more details on what investigators believe happened.

Those documents say that duct tape was found in and around the van. A knife was found in the Hook-n-Liner pond, a short distance from the van. A hand written note was found in the van detailing, among other things, an abduction of Michelle and her two sons in the Jesup area.

Sean told investigators that his mom had driven the van to the location, duct taped his eyes, nose and mouth, and removed him from the van. Sean said his mother then cut his neck. Sean said he heard his brother call out and saw his mom hurt him. Sean told investigators that no one else was in the area during the incident.

The criminal complaint also says that during an interview with police, Michelle Kehoe said she had purchased the duct tape about two months prior and a knife one month prior to the incident. She told police that she'd written the note about a month before the incident, and re-wrote the note on the morning of October 26th.

Michelle told police she started with Sean because he was older. She said Seth was contained in the van until she got back for him. She told police it all happened within 5 minutes and before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Michelle told police that she couldn't explain why she'd done it. She said that she couldn't face anyone. She said that she wanted to die or be locked up where she couldn't hurt anyone else.
