Iowa House Approves 'Ed Thomas' Bill
DES MOINES (AP) - The Iowa House has approved a measure that would require hospitals to notify police when a patient wanted for a crime is released.
The House approved the bill unanimously on Thursday. It now goes to the Senate where a similar measure has been approved.
The measure was sparked by the June slaying of Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas.
Mark Becker, 24, has been convicted in Thomas' death and faces a mandatory life sentence when he is sentenced next month.
Becker was admitted to a Waterloo hospital after he threatened a Cedar Falls man and damaged his garage, then led police on a high-speed chase on June 20.
Police were not notified of Becker's release on June 23. The next day, he gunned down Thomas in the school's weight room.
