PALO, Iowa — Iowa’s only nuclear power plant will be unaffected by furloughs at the agency tasked with overseeing the nation’s 100 commercial nuclear power plants.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans to furlough about 3,900 employees on Thursday because of the federal government shutdown. 300 essential personnel will remain on-duty.

The two resident inspectors stationed at the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo will be among those essential staff staying on the job. Those inspectors are tasked with ensuring the nuclear plant meets all government regulations.
