SIOUX CITY, Iowa - GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a packed Northwestern College gym Friday that a new jobs report shows why President Barack Obama should not return to the White House.
"This president tried, but he doesn't understand what it takes to make our economy work," Romney said during a campaign appearance. "I do."
Labor Department data released Friday shows U.S. employers added 96,000 jobs last month, below expectations. The August unemployment rate stood at 8.1 percent, compared to 8.3 percent in July.
Romney held a rally at noon at the Bultman Center, where a large banner proclaimed "Are you better off?"
Romney said an Obama win in November will ensure more of the same conditions.
"We're going to win this thing," he said.
He also told the crowd that he will champion small business and improve trade relations.
"America is about to come roaring back," he said.
The rally came the day after Obama accepted his party's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. Obama campaigned in Sioux City on Saturday.
