DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The top nonelected administrator in the Iowa House is leaving this month to go to work as legal counsel for the Iowa secretary of state.
House Chief Clerk Charlie Smithson has served as administrator in the House since his appointment by Speaker Kraig Paulsen in January 2010.
Secretary of State Matt Schultz says Smithson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in election law to his office. Smithson was executive director of the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board from 2001 to 2010.
Paulsen has appointed Carmine Boal of Ankeny to replace Smithson. Boal currently works for Gov. Terry Branstad. She was a Republican state representative from 1998 to 2008.
The chief clerk in the House manages the day-to-day operation of the chamber including supervision of personnel and the budget.
