Harkin Tours Iowa City VA Hospital

By Larry Burkum

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Longtime U.S. Senator Tom Harkin toured the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City Saturday, with a focus on mental health support for Iowa veterans.

Harkin toured the primary care facilities and outpatient surgery wing before spending time talking about the mental health services the hospital provides.

Harkin is currently pushing for a bill in Washington that would enhance mental health services for veterans.

"There needs to be more attention paid to correctly diagnosing, treating and follow-up with veterans with mental health problems," said Harkin.

He said he hopes to see the bill brought to the Senate floor within the next couple of weeks.
