GOP Nominates State Representative for Senate Seat

By Rachel Begle

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) - A special nominating convention has chosen state Rep. Julian Garrett as the Republican Party's nominee for Senate District 13.

Garrett won the nomination Thursday night at a nominating convention in Indianola.

The Democratic nominee will be chosen Monday at a nominating convention at the Martensdale-St. Marys Community School District office.

The nominees from each party will go before voters in a Nov. 19 special election.

The position became open when Kent Sorenson, a Republican from Milo, resigned after an independent investigator concluded he likely broke ethics rules in receiving money from presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's political action committee and presidential campaign.

Sorenson says his resignation wasn't an admission of wrongdoing.
