Family Finds Mortar Round While Cleaning Out Garage
BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The family of a Burlington woman who died in April has made an unexpected discovery while preparing for an estate sale — a live mortar round.
It was found on Wednesday. Emergency crews evacuated nearby homes and closed a gas station while authorities removed it.
Burlington Fire Chief Tom Clements told The Hawk Eye newspaper that the mortar round was likely a live round. Printed on the side were the date 1943 and the letters "IOP," which family members believe refers to the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.
The round was discovered at the home of Clara Marie Boyle. Her daughter, Jo Ann Hook of Henderson, Nev., says it was found in the garage and may have been sitting around for decades.
