Mark Geary


Editor's Note: After six-years, Mark Geary left KCRG-TV9 in April of 2011. Mark is now a reporter at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina. We wish Mark the best in his new position.

Mark Geary is an EMMY award winning General Assignment Reporter for KCRG-TV9 News. Mark joined the news team in January 2005. In addition to his television and online reports, he also writes articles for The Cedar Rapids Gazette several times a week.

Mark comes to KCRG-TV9 from WNEM-TV5 in Saginaw, Michigan, where he worked as a General Assignment Reporter. Before that, Mark worked at KOMU-TV8 in Columbia, Missouri, where he spent three years as a General Assignment Reporter. Mark earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. While at the university, Mark also taught several college courses.

During his career, multiple organizations have honored Mark. The Peter Jennings Project selected Mark to be a 2011 Peter Jennings Fellow. He recently won an Edward R. Murrow award for Broadcast Writing. He also earned an EMMY award for a story about an Iowa couple that sells DVDs on eBay. In addition, he has won several Associated Press, Iowa Broadcast News Association and Northwest Broadcast News Association awards.

In 2010, Mark was an embedded reporter with the Iowa National Guard at Camp Ripley, Minn., Camp Shelby, Miss., and Fort Irwin, Calif., as the soldiers prepared to deploy to Afghanistan. He spent one week with the troops at each military base. You can check out his reports by clicking here.

During the 2008 Iowa Caucuses, Mark interviewed every candidate including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee and several other lesser-known candidates.

In 2007, the Cedar Rapids School District inducted Mark into the Volunteer Hall of Fame. He enjoys mentoring high school students and helping them improve their writing skills.

Mark grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and he's happy to be working here in the Midwest. He loves to tell creative stories about people in the community, and enjoys reporting because each day on the job is always different.

In his free time, Mark likes to listen to music, read, watch movies and talk to friends. Mark and his wife, Letitia, live in Cedar Rapids.
