IOWA CITY, Iowa - Police in Iowa City are warning residents to lock their doors after a slight uptick in burglaries in Iowa City's Northside neighborhood.

"Really what prompted [the warning] was that we had three burglaries yesterday," Iowa City police Sgt. Vicki Lalla said. "They were all reported in the same area."

Police say burglaries typically trend up this time of year as the holiday season approaches.

"It's something that we see and really we just want people to be aware of it," crime prevention officer Jorey Bailey said.

Bailey said residents should keep their doors locked, especially when they're not home. He said it's more common for burglars to seek open doors over physically breaking-into a residence.

"A lot of time if a door is locked, they just move on to the next house or apartment," he said.
