CORALVILLE, Iowa - Coralville Police have charged five female students with disorderly conduct after a fight broke out on an Iowa City Community School District bus, Monday afternoon.

Three of those students charged are juveniles. The others are 20-year-old Kerene Mausa and 18-year-old Situ Mausa.

The school district’s community relations coordinator, Kate Moreland, said in a statement: “The District is following up on the incident with the students and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken."

Police said the bus was full of West High School Students, headed home, when the fight started at 3:50 that afternoon.

A YouTube user, Jonathan Fletcher, captured the about two minute long fight on video. Most of that time the bus was in motion. The bus driver eventually pulled over at the Coralville Hardee’s, and towards the end of the video, can be seen standing up and getting students back into their seats.

Some have criticized the driver for not acting sooner, but Coralville Police said the man made the right call, considering he was driving in heavy afternoon traffic.

"He did the right thing. He's trying to manipulate safely through traffic to get to a place where he can get the bus stopped," said Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford. "He could have run into somebody, they could have shoved somebody on top of him, could have caused an accident. Could have had people hurt."

The company contracted to drive the school district's buses, Durham School Services, issued a statement about the incident: "When a fight erupts on a bus, the bus driver's responsibility is to pull over and take measures to keep everyone calm and safe. This includes reporting the incident to dispatch, who will alert the appropriate authorities."

Coralville police said there were no injuries reported. They weren't sure what started the fight.
