Young Cancer Patient Helps Implode Building

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former Des Moines nursing school building was demolished in seconds, with help from a 6-year-old cancer patient.

Joey Mausser of Urbandale pushed the button Sunday that triggered the implosion at the former Iowa Methodist School of Nursing. The building in downtown Des Moines was demolished to make way for expanded emergency and critical care facilities at UnityPoint Health.

The implosion began at 7 a.m. and lasted for about 18 seconds.

Mausser is a patient at Blank Children's Hospital. His parents bid for the opportunity to push the button at an event in November.

UnityPoint Health says the building was mostly used for office space after the school closed. The last class of nurses graduated from the school in 1999.
