Where Does the Snow Go?

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – City plows had cleared all major streets in Cedar Rapids by about seven Wednesday morning. But crews were still working Wednesday night to recover from this blizzard. Now, all that snow is stacking up alongside the roads. It can be tough to see when you’re at an intersection.

“The height of the snow is getting taller and taller,” Public Works Spokesperson Craig Hanson said. “It’s a major issue right now for many of the residential roads.”

The storm produced about 13 inches of snow. That’s more than we typically get during the entire month of February.

Most of that snow gets pushed to the side of the road, but the downtown snow ends up at the intersection of 4th Street and 12th Avenue Southeast.

Crews have already dumped about 1,500 truckloads full of snow in that field. Within the next week or so, they could dump another 1,000.

Sometimes that snow field fills up. When that happens, crews dump the snow at Osborn Park or at the Sinclair Site. A few years ago, they actually had to do that because there was so much snow.
