DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The campground at Emerson Bay State Recreation Area on the southwest shore of West Okoboji Lake is open again after completion of a renovation project that took nearly a year.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says word spread Sunday night that the campground would open on Monday and people were camping out in line to secure a campsite.

Demand for the campground has traditionally been high because it is adjacent to a popular boat ramp.

Construction crews removed trees and brush, installed new electrical lines, camping pads and living spaces, and remodeled the older restroom/shower building.

The DNR says the campground has fewer campsites but more sites with electricity. Now, 82 sites have power and 23 of those also offer water and sewer connections.
