West Branch Man Arrested for Child Porn Now Facing Federal Charges

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A West Branch man now faces federal child pornography charges.

Brady Verlo, 22, was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on charges of receiving child pornography in August 2013. He is being held without bond and will appear for a detention hearing Feb. 5.

Verlo, who worked with a day care in West Branch, was arrested earlier this month on six state charges of sexual exploitation of a minor. Those charges are still pending, online court records show.

Verlo admitted to having 400 photos and videos of child pornography on his cell phone, and more than 1,000 images on his computer, criminal complaints state. Verlo admitted to sharing files with others over the Internet, according to the complaints.

The federal charges Verlo faces carry a potentially longer sentence than he would have faced in state court. If convicted, Verlo faces a mandatory minimum sentence of at least five years on the federal charge. The maximum sentence is up to 20 years imprisonment and anywhere from five years to life on supervised probation following imprisonment.
