Waterloo Homeless Shelter Gets Treatment for Bedbugs

Meet The Team

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A homeless shelter in Waterloo says it's recovering from a recent bedbug infestation, though its financial reserves have been drained in the process.

The St. Francis Catholic Worker House says an exterminator was called in Tuesday following a resident's complaint of bedbug bites. People in the men's and women's guest houses were moved out.

Organizers say the cost of treating the infestation totaled nearly $6,000. That price tag takes a big chunk out of the group's bank account. The shelter works off donations and receives no federal funding.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports guests will most likely be allowed to return Sunday afternoon.
