Waterloo Groups Gather Clothing for Refugees

  • Photo
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A group of friends originally from Syria have gathered enough clothing to fill a semi-trailer and will ship the items to Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Dema Kazkaz Masri tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier she wanted to help some of the thousands of people who have fled Syria due to the extended conflict there.

Masri left Syria 16 years ago and her family eventually moved to Waterloo.

She got in touch with friends scattered across Iowa and they sought donations of clothing, noting that many refuges left Syria with almost nothing. Over two weeks, contributions poured into the Masjid Al Noor Waterloo Cedar Falls Islamic Center.

The items will be shipped to Texas and then sent to Turkey, where the clothing should arrive in March.
