IOWA CITY, Iowa During a search of the apartment of a 21-year-old Iowa City man accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was showing her apartment last week, officers found handcuffs, a knife, women's bras, underwear and nylons, and an empty package of Viagra, according to court documents released Thursday.
Search warrant returns for Peng Tang's apartment at 923 E. College St. #8 show investigators collected DNA samples from Tang along with clothing, a broken bra strap found by his trash can, a heart-shaped box of condoms and a lock-picking book with tools.
The applications for the search warrants reveal more details about the alleged assault on March 29. According to the court records, the woman who said she was sexually assaulted placed an advertisement to sublet her apartment on www.zhan.renren.com, a website used by Chinese nationals.
A man who she had never met responded and made arrangements to visit the apartment at 8 p.m. The woman told officers that she met the man at the front door and led him to her apartment, where he asked to see her bedroom, according to the warrants.
After entering the bedroom, the suspect later identified as Tang grabbed her hands and tried to them up behind her back, according to the warrants. He then put a towel in the woman's mouth, according to police, made her to turn off her cellphone and forced her to have sex with him and perform other sexual acts, the documents show.
During the acts, Tang is accused of taking pictures and telling the woman, "You have better follow my requirements because I have a knife," according to the search warrants.
Tang also is accused of forcing the woman to pose for nude photographs and threatening to post the pictures online if she went to the police, according to the warrants. Tang is accused of telling the woman, "Don't do stupid things," and, "Today, you cooperated well and we were happy."
Near the end of the assault, the woman told Tang, according to police, that she had people waiting for her at the University of Iowa's main library. Tang then walked the woman to the library and left her there, according to the report.
He texted her later with the threat that he would post the pictures online if she went to the police, investigators reported.
The woman went to the UI Hospitals and Clinics and contacted police on March 30. The suspect called the victim with a blocked number, and the woman told officers she believed he would respond to a text message from her, according to the warrants.
Working with officers, the woman sent text messages to Tang asking to meet him at her apartment in the afternoon, according to the warrant.
"When the suspect showed up for the meeting, the victim could see the suspect and identified him as her assailant," according to police. "Officers then moved in and took the suspect into custody."
Tang told investigators that he was at the complex to see a friend. He was carrying a backpack and told officers it contained a computer, a cellphone and a "fruit knife," according to the warrant.
According to the search warrant return for the backpack, officers found condoms, a passport and a folding knife, among other things.
During a police interview, Tang admitted to having sex with the woman, carrying handcuffs and a knife and placing his hand over the woman's nose and mouth to keep her from screaming.
Tang is being held at the Johnson County Jail in lieu of $750,000 cash-only bond. He's also on an immigration hold.
