Warehouse Still Burning Near Downtown Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Smoke continues to rise from a warehouse fire near downtown Des Moines, and the city's fire chief says it could be days before the blaze is extinguished.

Fire Chief John TeKippe says firefighters had made progress by Friday morning. The fire was reported Thursday evening and caused black smoke to trail across much of east Des Moines.

TeKippe says the warehouse was filled with huge piles of debris. Crews can't reach the flames until heavy equipment knocks down sections of the building.

City public works employees managed to tear down several large doors that gave firefighters greater access.

It's unclear what caused the fire.

Because the fire required a large response, fire departments from several nearly communities helped fight the fire and responded to other calls in Des Moines.
