IOWA CITY, Iowa – Hawkeye football offensive-lineman Josh Koeppel was hit while riding his motorcycle Monday morning in downtown Iowa City, and now video of the crash has surfaced.
Iowa City police say Koeppel was given a police recording of the accident and then showed that video to friends. Soon after it was posted on the Internet.
Iowa City police Sergeant Denise Brotherton said Koeppel was heading westbound on Burlington Street on his Yamaha motorcycle when John Logan, 54, of Iowa City turned left onto Gilbert Street and struck Koeppel. Logan was driving a Ford F-150.
Brotherton said Koeppel did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to be evaluated.
Logan was cited for failure to yield upon making a left turn.
“I was scared,” fellow O-lineman Julian Vandervelde said Tuesday. “I heard about halfway through the day he had been tagged. I wasn’t entirely sure what his situation was, but we got in touch with the hospital and they said, no, he’s already out.
“I was a little surprised about that, but then I thought about it. It’s Josh Koeppel. He’s probably the toughest guy on the team. A truck isn’t going to stop him.”
“It’s a very popular form of transportation. I just try to encourage them to be careful. I encourage them to wear helmets, but I haven’t been very successful on that front," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.
Koeppel is listed as a possible starter at center for the Hawkeyes this Fall.
"We'll wait and see. We certainly won't take any crazy chances. It is unfortunate what happened and from what I've heard he is very fortunate it isn't worse. It's one thing to play football. It's another to take on a pickup truck. ... We saw him walk out of the building yesterday. We'll take it day by day," said Ferentz.
