University of Iowa Faculty Group Concerned About UNI Cuts
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A University of Iowa faculty group says an investigation by a national group into the University of Northern Iowa's handling of budget cuts could have damaging effects on public higher education throughout Iowa.
UI's chapter of the American Association of University Professors issued a statement Thursday expressing support for UNI colleagues after their administration announced plans to close several programs and offer affected professors buyout packages.
The national AAUP has started an investigation into whether UNI administrators violated the rights of faculty members in the process, which included little chance for input. UNI officials deny the charge.
The UI AAUP chapter says the investigation could put UNI on a list of censured universities, which would "bring national disrepute on the other Regents institutions in Iowa" and hurt recruiting efforts.
