University of Dubuque Among Top "Military Friendly" Schoolsby Katie Wiedemann, Reporter
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Iowa's colleges and universities appear to be making the grade when it comes to helping military families. On Monday, Victory Media and GIJOBS.com revealed its top "military friendly" colleges and universities.
When Sergeant Ryan Halverson finished a tour duty in Iraq 3 years ago, he only had a couple weeks to settle in before starting classes at the University of Dubuque. "Getting out of the military they give you approximately 15 days or so trying to get to school, get a house and try to locate where everything is at is kind of difficult," Sgt. Halverson said. The G.I. Bill pays for Halverson's tuition but he's getting help from the University of Dubuque. "The school gives me a scholarship to stay in a house for free so they take care of my housing problem." The University's Director of Admissions, Jesse James, says he will do whatever he can to help military members get into classes. "There's a lot of things that I'll give them a pass on with their applications that I figured their time and service has satisfied," James said. James says those are things like a strong high school grade point average, and letters of recommendation. "As a retired soldier and college administrator, I believe we owe it to them to help transition back into life." The University also has a staff person assigned to help military students with the stacks and stacks of paper work they say comes along with the using the G.I. Bill. |
