A lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Iowa is accused of reporting his laptop stolen because it contained pornography.

According to University of Iowa police, on Jan. 13, 56-year-old Brent A. Sandy reported that his laptop had been stolen from his office while he was away for three minutes. UI Information Technology Services staff was able to track down the allegedly stolen laptop using its Mediacom IP address. Police used that information to determine the laptop was actually at Sandy's home.

When police executed a search warrant at Sandy's Iowa City residence, they not only found the laptop, but also a small container of marijuana, a dugout and a one-hitter, according to criminal complaints. Police said Sandy admitted to taking the laptop from his office because he was scheduled to get a new laptop and his old one contained pornography.

Sandy also admitted the substance they found in his home was marijuana.

The lecturer now faces charges of third-degree theft, making false reports, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
