UNI Staff Propose Center on Education Issues

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A group of staff at the University of Northern Iowa has proposed a research center that focuses on issues facing similar institutions.

The UNI staff recently proposed the Center for the Study of Undergraduate Education to the school's Faculty Senate. The university provost's office must give final approval.

Organizers say the center would focus on comprehensive institutions like UNI. They describe these institutions as smaller, and catering to regional students. Supporters say these institutions have pressing challenges like falling enrollment and fewer revenue streams and marketing options.

Organizers want to compile data showcasing how comprehensive institutions can distinguish themselves. They estimate a total operating budget of about $25,000.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the group hopes to host an annual symposium beginning in 2015 that focuses on undergraduate education.
