UI to Film Documentary of Hancher Auditorium Demolition

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The University of Iowa is creating a feature-length documentary capturing the demolition of its flood-damaged Hancher Auditorium.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the film is a requirement for federal funding and will chronicle the past, present and future of the building. The school likely will hold public viewings of the film and make it available for purchase.

The Hancher Auditorium was damaged during 2008 flooding and will cost $176 million to replace. The film has been budgeted to cost $200,000.

The agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency over the film is part of a law that aims to mitigate the loss of tearing down a historic building.

A university spokesman says the film will probably be completed around February 2015.
