Iowa City- A group of University of Iowa students are growing beards to raise money for breast cancer. The campaign called "Beards for Boobies" started last November and raises money to donate to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in Iowa City.

The campaign was started by four male University Iowa students. The idea sparked when Corey Collins, a Junior at UI, witnessed how devastating breast cancer can be. "Last year when my mom passed away from it, it really hit home. So the efforts really got pushed to make this an emphasis on those who lost their lives," said Collins.

"We got an idea, strapped a name on it, pulled together our money, bought the bands, and the campaign started from there," added Mike Greevy, who's also a junior at UI.

They campaign during the month they call "November to remember". The group sells and wears wristbands and T-shirts to honor all those who lost their life to cancer. The group has already sold more than 700 wristbands and expects to raise more money than last year. "I would see people wearing the wristbands or T-shirts and I don't even know who they are which is cool," said Collins.

"The momentum is the biggest part. When you feel the momentum of the campaign, that's what really keeps us going," added Greevy.

Collins and Greevy hope the movement expands. "It started in a room with four friends who had an idea and I hope that maybe in a couple years this is going to be something on a national level," said Collins. But whether every November beards sprout across the nation or just on the University of Iowa campus, Collins and Greevy just hope beards continue to grow for breast cancer.

The group will present a check to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center on December 6th at 5:45 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union. If you would like more information about the cause and campaign you can visit their website at:
