UI Student Claims Charges Are Elevated

  • Photo
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A University of Iowa student accused of attacking an Iowa City police officer claims the Johnson County attorney's office has elevated the charges because the alleged victim is an officer.

Branden Plummer is charged with attempted murder and willful injury in the attack on Sgt. Brian Krei on Nov. 18.

Plummer wants the attorney general's office to prosecute his case. His attorney, Mark Brown says in his motion the attempted murder charge doesn't fit the crime.

Assistant County Attorney Anne Lahey says her interpretation of Brown's motion was that he believed there was a conflict of interest, but she doesn't believe there's any basis for that.

Brown has filed several motions, including asking the court to dismiss the attempted murder charge and move the trial. A hearing is Jan. 17.
