UI Plays Host to Special Olympics "Unified Sports Day"
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa and Special Olympics offered the space and the spirit to bring a "Unified Sports Day" to campus for the first time. About 50 athletes representing Iowa City and Cedar Rapids gathered at the university's field house, Sunday. They participated in all kinds of games including bag toss, basketball, and baseball. Each athlete was paired with a student from the UI.
"It's a very cool experience for them. We've got a cheer station too so they're learning some different cheers, and they're pulling for the Hawkeyes today whether they want to or not," Adrienne Johnson with Special Olympics Iowa said.
Organizers say because of the positive experience at the UI, the event will definitely be coming back in the future. Sunday's sports day at the University of Iowa wasn't the only one. Unified sports days are held at other colleges around the state.
