Two People Injured in Dubuque Apartment Fire

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Firefighters in Dubuque spent several hours on the scene of an apartment fire Thursday morning.

A Dubuque police officer first reported seeing smoke coming from the four-plex apartment at 1071 White Street at 2:44 a.m. The officer evacuated everyone from the four apartments.

John Starks Sr., 45, of 1071 White Street took himself to Finley Hospital in Dubuque for injuries suffered in the fire. He was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A neighbor is also believed to have been injured in the fire, but he left before emergency personnel arrived.

The apartments have substantial fire, smoke and water damage and will be closed to tenants for an indefinite period of time.

The American Red Cross said its volunteers responded to this fire. The organization says it is assisting the four families impacted by the fire.

A cause has not been determined. It is being investigated by Dubuque Fire Department, Dubuque Police Department and Dubuque Drug Task Force.
