CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Two men were injured during a fight involving a knife and a tire iron in a southwest Cedar Rapids parking lot Thursday.
Officers responded around 3 a.m. to the fight near an apartment building in the 400 block of Jacolyn Dr. SW. They learned the incident happened when Briden Houke, 20, of Cedar Rapids, came to the apartment to speak to a woman inside, but was denied entry.
According to the police report, Jason Taggart, 37, who lives at that apartment, opened the door and would not let Houke inside. A fight ensued, and the men wrestled on the ground.
Police said Taggart used a pocket knife during the incident. Houke had arrived at the apartment with another man, and police were trying to determine who used the tire iron in the fight.
"We're getting differing stories on everything from who threw the first punch to who had the tire iron," Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said.
Houke was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with a cut to the left side of his torso, while Taggart, who was hit with the tire iron, was taken to Mercy Medical Center for injuries to his face and ribs, police said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The third man involved, whose name was not released, was not hurt.
No charges have been filed, as police continue to investigate.
