CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire at Shamrock Condominiums, 324 Jacolyn Drive SW Sunday night.

It started around 7:30 p.m. Firefighters could see thick black smoke from several blocks away and arrived on scene at the two-story, 15-unit condominium complex to find fire pushing out of a ground level apartment window on the back side of the dwelling.

Firefighters also found two victims outside of the dwelling needing medical attention.

One of the victims was a 27-year old male who was allegedly in Apartment #3 and suffered smoke inhalation and possible burns. Another victim, a 46-year-old woman, appeared to have a medical condition that was aggravated by the fire. This victim was in another apartment and evacuated when several people began knocking on condominium doors to alert residents.

At this time, it appears that 17 people were evacuated from the 15 units at Shamrock Condominiums, including the two patients. Both victims were transported for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The Red Cross is assisting two displaced occupants. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
