Two Charged With Assault and Riot After Bar Attack

  • Photo
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Two Iowa City women are accused of assault and rioting for attacking another woman in a downtown bar in November.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, 21-year-old Alyssa M. Hayes and 23-year-old Cristin J. L. Snodgrass were both at DC's Bar at 1:52 a.m. Nov. 8. Police said another woman accidentally bumped into Hayes, which prompted Hayes to begin berating the other woman. Police said Hayes hit the woman multiple times, took her to the ground and continued to attack her.

Hayes was joined in the assault by Snodgrass and another woman not named in criminal complaints, police said. The alleged victim suffered swelling and bruises from the assault, as well as a broken iPhone. A bystander who attempted to intervene also had their glasses broken in the melee.

Hayes and Snodgrass were interviewed the night of the incident, but denied involvement, police said. Hayes later admitted to the attack, but Snodgrass continues to deny she was involved, police said.

Both women now face charges of assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor; and riot, an aggravated misdemeanor. Riot is defined in the Iowa Code as three or more people acting together in a violent manner.
