BALLTOWN, Iowa — The driver of the semi involved in a Saturday fatal accident was involved in another fatal accident in 2003. The fatal accident south of Balltown remains under investigation, with no charges filed as of Monday.

In that accident, Mark Kerper, 55, of Ames, was killed when a trailer broke free from a northbound semi trailer truck driven by John Bahl, 73, of Sherrill.
The trailer hit Kerper’s car, which was southbound on Balltown Road, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Bahl and a passenger in Kerper’s car were not injured.

In September 2003, Bahl was driving a flatbed trailer when a backhoe slid off the trailer on Highway 52 east of Rickardsville in Dubuque County. The backhoe hit a car, killing a Davenport man and seriously injuring the female driver from Davenport.

Bahl had volunteered his semi to haul the backhoe to Sherrill to do work for the Sherrill Fire Department.

After that 2003 accident, Bahl pleaded guilty to safety violations and paid a $400 fine. A charge of failure to comply with safety regulations was dismissed, according to Iowa Courts Online.

Bahl also was charged in March 2007 in Davis County with failure to comply with safety regulations and violating maximum hours of service. He pleaded guilty and paid an unspecified fine, according to Iowa Courts Online.
