Threat of Severe Weather Forcing Prep Football Starting Time Moves
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Some schools are rescheduling their Friday night football games to earlier start times due to severe weather in the forecast.
Storms are expected to move through Eastern Iowa Friday evening into the overnight hours.
The Cedar Rapids Washington at Xavier varsity football game is now scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The KCRG 9.2 Friday Night Lights LIVE game of the week, Union at Waukon, is now scheduled to start at 7 p.m. TV coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. Click here for a list of games affected.
Safety rules for schools call for a 30 minute game suspension after any lightning strike is heard. If another strike happens, the clock is reset for another 30 minute delay.
According to KCCI-TV, the Iowa High School Athletic Association sent a letter to schools this week reminding them of the safety rules because of the forecast for severe storms Friday.
The letter called on schools to have a plan in place to handle a severe weather event. Many schools move players and fans into the nearest building for shelter that is closest to the football field.
