Thieves Take Safe Filled with Silver, Gold

  • Photo
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - A vintage safe filled with $250,000 worth of silver bars and gold coins has been stolen, and the owner is offering a $5,000 cash reward for its return.

The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports that the safe, which belongs to a Marshalltown woman in her 60s, was stolen July 6 from an apartment garage.

The Des Moines Register reports that the woman had inherited the gold and silver from her father, who had collected the precious metals for years.

A Des Moines private detective hired by the woman said safe is 3 to 4 feet tall. Because it was filled with silver and gold, the detective estimates it would have taken five or six to lift it.
