Supreme Court Rejects Marin Appeal In Cedar Rapids Murders

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court has upheld the double murder conviction of a man found guilty in the stabbing deaths of two cousins in Cedar Rapids.

The court issued its ruling Friday against Kyle Marin, who was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the 2006 slayings of Molly Edmondson and Katrina Hill, and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Marin argued the district court erred in not allowing a jury instruction that would have allowed involuntary intoxication as a complete defense for the crimes. The Supreme Court says the proposed instruction would not have changed the trial's outcome.

Marin's attorney on the appeal, Mark Smith, says Marin will likely seek post-conviction relief, a constitutional challenge, claiming mistakes were made by his trial attorney. Geoff Greenwood, a spokesman for the Iowa attorney general's office, says prosecutors are satisfied with the court's decision.
